Trail Etiquette Public Service Announcement: Pooping on the Run

In the past, I have written articles on the topic of trail etiquette. Previous articles discussed the importance of yielding to upcoming foot and bicycle traffic, yielding to horses, and staying on designated trails. A disgusting and disturbing trail issue has been brought to my attention by multiple individuals. Apparently, some members of the Missoula running (and likely hiking, cycling) community have decided it is appropriate to poop on public and private land without packing the poop out.

Leaving human waste behind is wrong on so many obvious levels. Open space and public land use is skyrocketing as Missoula and the surrounding areas grow. Respecting the land and those who enjoy and use our trails is vital for a positive experience. Human feces is a biohazard. Bacteria makes up over 50% of the dry weight of human feces. Leaving it behind is hazardous for dogs, wildlife, and ground water. Dogs roll in it, eat it, and humans step in it. Yes, disgusting isn’t it?

Picking up after our dogs is an expected practice and responsibility of pet owner. Picking up after yourself, should you have the unavoidable urge to take a dump on a run, hike, or ride, is the expected and responsible thing to do as well. Pack a poop bag and a rubber glove. Poop before you leave the house or trailhead. I hope this is the one and only time I have to write a trail etiquette article on the topic of inconsiderate humans leaving fecal matter throughout our amazing network of trails.
